Group Race/Snake Race in SSB GTO

🐍 Group Race (Snake Race) in SSB GTO

A High-Energy Test of Team Spirit and Stamina

The Group Race, also known as the Snake Race, is one of the most thrilling and high-energy tasks in the GTO (Group Testing Officer) series of the SSB (Services Selection Board) interview. It is designed to assess your team spirit, cooperation, stamina, leadership, and competitive attitude — all while pushing you to your physical limits in a fun way.

 What Happens in the Task

This is an inter-group race between two or three GTO groups. Each group is given a long, rope-like heavy structure (called the “snake”) which must be carried throughout the race. A set of 6 obstacles are placed in a line, and each group must race through their own path/channel while carrying the snake. The snake must not be put down during the entire race.

The race is about finishing first, but more importantly, about working together as one team. You will encounter obstacles like:

  • Climbing a vertical wall
  • Walking over a web net
  • Crawling under nets
  • Balancing on beams
  • Jumping over small gaps
  • Passing through tunnels or tires

This is a very exciting and thrilling task that you are likely to enjoy. The stress of competition will test how well you motivate and coordinate your team, even when you're tired.

 What the GTO Observes

  • Team spirit and cooperation
  • Initiative and responsibility
  • Leadership under stress
  • Communication and coordination
  • Physical courage and stamina
  • Positive attitude and enthusiasm

Remember: Winning is not mandatory, but working together is.

 Rules of the Snake Race

  • Holding the snake: While crossing obstacles, at least 3 members must hold it at all times. During the rest of the movement, everyone must hold it.
  • War cry: Your group will be asked to choose a war cry before the race starts. You should shout it loudly and together during the run and while crossing obstacles.
  • Penalties: If any rule is broken, there are two types of penalties:
    • Time penalty: Your group must stop and do a countdown, losing precious time.
    • Repetition penalty: Some or all members may be asked to repeat an obstacle.
  • Individual mistake: If a single member makes a wrong move, they may be asked to redo the obstacle alone before rejoining the group.
  • Safety: Medical help will be present on the field. Some minor scratches or bruises are normal, but try to stay injury-free.

💡 Important Tip: Do not try to get the GTO’s attention or make eye contact unnecessarily — they are already observing you. Focus on your task and team.

Tips to Perform Well

  • Be energetic and cooperative from start to finish.
  • Motivate and cheer your teammates constantly.
  • Help weaker members climb or cross obstacles quickly.
  • Hold the snake properly and never let it touch the ground.
  • Show balanced leadership — lead when needed, support when others are leading.
  • Stay positive and encouraging instead of blaming mistakes.
  • Stick with your group — don’t run ahead alone.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to show off individually
  • Ignoring rules or leaving teammates behind
  • Shouting angrily or blaming others
  • Letting the snake touch the ground
  • Forgetting to use the war cry

Glimpses of the Group Race

Final Thoughts

The Snake Race is not about strength, but about spirit. If you remain positive, energetic, and cooperative — and keep your focus on team success over personal glory — you will naturally demonstrate the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) the GTO is looking for.
