- The energy policy of India is largely defined by the country's expanding energy deficit and increased focus on developing alternative sources of energy, particularly nuclear, solar and wind energy.
- India ranks 81 position in overall energy self-sufficiency at 66% in 2014.
- The primary energy consumption in India is the third biggest after China and USA with 5.5% global share in 2016.
- India is the third top coal producer in 2013 with 7.6% production share of coal (including lignite) in the world.
- Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, M. Veerappa Moily has said that India will become self-sufficient in the energy sector by 2030.
- He said here on Saturday that the import bill for petroleum products was $160 billion now. Mr. Moily said it would come down by 50 per cent by 2020, 75 per cent by 2025 and stopped by 2030.
- By 2017, India will receive natural gas from Turkmenistan through the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline.
- With regards to Energy however, it makes sense to be self sufficient as Energy transfer from other economies is a very expensive affair.
- Heck, it was impossible to transfer power from South India to other regions until a few years ago.
- India being a diverse geography, has a lot of sources for almost every form of renewable energy including nuclear which is very promising at the moment.
