Lecturrete Topic 1 - Afforestation: A Crying Need

1. Afforestation is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees (forestation) in an area where there was no previous tree cover.

2. In the early periods of civilizations, large parts of our country were covered with forests. The increase of the population of our country has led to the shrinking of forest area.

3. The forests which purify air have been cut down and new cities and industries have been established in their place. The cutting of the forests causes what is called "The Green House Effect".

4. Large industries and power plants need a large area to set up its facilities. In India, deforestation has happened in the past for creating Infrastructure (National Highways, Airports, etc.), Industries (Steel, Power, Fast Moving Consumer Goods – FMCG, Engineering, etc.), Mining (Coal, Minerals, Metals, etc.), Oil and Gas exploration, Thermal Power plants, etc.

5. Afforestation is necessary to combat the issues of global warming, soil erosion, pollution, and the maintenance of biodiversity and ecological balances.

6. Trees uses water and carbon-dioxide (CO2) to convert it into organic matter (wood) and oxygen. Thus, trees acts as the natural air-purifiers and helps relieve the environment.

7. It grows trees that provide wildlife habitats.

8. Through photosynthesis, trees play an important role in fighting against the greenhouse effect, which is a big contributing factor causing climate change around the world.

9. Aside from this, it provides more job opportunities, while helping local businesses with an increased supply of its products as well as benefiting the local economy.

10. One potentially huge drawback of afforestation is the simple fact that it comes with real opportunity cost, where the transformed lands can no longer be used for residential developments and agriculture that are highly beneficial to the society through more supply of food and housing for those who need them.

11. The Central Government is also providing assistance to States Governments and Union Territory Administrations under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme “National Afforestation Programme (NAP)” for the regeneration of degraded forests and adjoining areas through people’s participation.

1. Roughly 24% of India's area is covered with forest (nearly 1/4th) which has increased in past years:
The latest India State of Forest Report (ISFR 2021) revealed that the total forest and tree cover of the country 24.62 percent of the geographical area of the country compared to 24.16 percent in ISFR 2015.

2. The National Forest Policy's aim of a forest and tree cover of 33 percent of the geographical area. This is an ambitious goal that is difficult to achieve. There is greater awareness now of the importance of forests. Therefore, efforts to increase the forest cover should continue, so that there is at least no further loss.

Personal note: I request everyone to plant and grow at least 10 trees in your life, you can plant them in your home, in nearby gardens, in empty places near/or in remote areas. Those who will be joining forces should aim for at least 50 trees (during your entire service lifetime) as there will be a lot of empty areas available in Cantt and near your quarters.
Also, you can encourage your neighbors (specially children) to plant trees.
